I've noticed that when I type certain words as in a review, I get told that I'm using nuaghty words. Now I don't mind censuring, but when I type in an alternate name for a rooster or metion a specific accent spoken by people born within the sound of Big Ben in London, I'm told I'm using naughty language. These are just two examples of many. I do have a rather extensive vocabulary, and this gets frustrating at times. Is there anyway that the program that moniters these things be upgraded a bit?

I was leaving a wall message about singers-Lionel Ritchie and Marvin (happy)e. She is European and amused at puritanical censoring.

As a dutch I type dutch with other dutch people.
Sometimes it happens the program turns the words in the ' no no' signs.
Most of the time not frustrating but funny.
Other times it makes me very curious, Why those signs?
What does it mean ? Paarse maan means purple moon but on my wall I get the no no signs.

I've had that problem with leaving reviews and on my wall. After a little digging and trial and error, it seems that when you leave a review for a game, you can not use certain punctuation like ?, ! or '...silly but when I took all those out, my review when in just fine...and on your wall, the filter does star out or use symbols instead of certain words or set of letters which does make it look like you're swearing even if you're not...someone did try to explain to me how the "censor" was or wasn't intuitive or something like that and it would be nice if there was some tweaking and updating but hey, if it keeps someone from using inappropriate language, I can live with that...it's unfortunate that some words, which are perfectly legitimate when properly used, have been commonly used to put down people so they got included in the filter...now if it would just filter out a few more of the words some kids (and some adults...) are using that just aren't very polite to others, it would make my day...no one needs to be called "stupid" and the word "sucks" is just rude! JMHO

Thanks Momaie, you are right of course about people who put others down, and I'm glad I don't have to put up with that on the iwin site. I was just getting very frustrated because I was trying phrase my review in a humorus manner as I usually do and the censure wouldn't let me. It would be nice to have more intellegent computers...maybe not...I watch too many sci-fi shows.

It's okay Breandan, my last name contains that word you're referring to. It throws every solicitor/pollster off after "Is this Mrs. Bab--- (alternate name for rooster)". They usually try very hard to avoid saying my last name correctly... and I laugh at them and hang up.

I have tried to register for website postings and had an error message come up saying "please pick an alternate last name, one that does not contain foul language". SAY WHAT!?

There are many common words that have been used for centuries are now used for something completely different. Makes a wordsmith like myself very sad, watching languages die out to internet censorship and text abbreviations.

This is really off the subject, but concerning the censored words comments, I am currently stuck with our local library computer. The settings on this thing is almost funny. If you type in "Star Trek" you will be given a notice that "this site is unavailabe due to sexual content." It comes down on how high the security setting is set, wheather a word or phase comes up as being "censored"

Well, Captain Kirk was quite the ladies man.

I have learned more "bad" words from website filters than I ever learned on my own. It goes like this: a commonplace word gets filtered. I furrow my brow and wonder, "Say what?" So then I look up bits of the filtered word using an urban slang dictionary. Voila, new word learned. I'll bet teens are smarter than I am about this sort of "research".

One of my favorite forum filters replaces the offending words with substitutes such as "thingie", so that Scythia, for instance, would become Mrs. Babthingie. It's hilarious at times, especially since that forum is a private discussion board with about 12 members, all good friends IRL, and it really doesn't need a filter but you can't turn it off.
