The strategy guide has some info about abilities if you have unlocked it. I think I got it at the end of the Air Realm.

Here is what the guide says:

Starting Abilities: Starting abilities are used at the start of the board. You don't need to do anything to get this bonus.

Special Abilities: Special Abilities are used by clicking on the character portrait found in the bottom of the screen. Once used, the special ability will have to recharge before you can use it again.

Active Abilities: Active abilities are used by making a match of 5 or more. Once a match has been made, the power will be in effect for a short period of time. The screen will glow for as long as the ability is in effect.

I was a little confused too, but I found the guide helped me. Hopefully it helps you too!

Oh! Which character is your favorite? I like Ali and Tanya best.

I'm in the China part and there is this bug critter that moves up the board. How do I get rid of it so I can finish the board? Is there a way to skip this game and go on?

Rzat, thanks for the help! At the beginning of the game the strategy game was locked and I never went back to it. I think I have it now. I also like Ali and Tanya; I'm a little surprised at Natalie. I guess I expected her to be the main character. This game is good, but The Sleepless Star is my all time favorite!

I think that one is from The Sleepless Star. You have to match 3 of that other special jewel (The one with the guy and a spear on it), then you click on the "Evasion" button to knock down one of those climber guys. Some of those boards are pretty tricky, but I figured out Trevor can knock them down with his special ability!

jacarmelia@ff wrote:how do you get 5 stars? is it onlydetermined by points?

I looked in the strategy guide for an answer and here is what I found:

"The number inside a completed board indicates your Star Ranking for that level. Complete boards on Advanced to earn 5 stars!"

Looks like you'll have to play some advanced boards for 5 stars. Some of them are pretty tough!

I noticed I had some 5 stars already, even though I was playing on Normal. But I think those are only for tutorial boards... so you get some free 5 star scores!

So, when you play on normal, you can only get upto 4 except on tutorial when you get 5. in sleepless star, you can get silver or gold by the point count. The question I have is you only play thru this one time???It is not like JQ Heritage where you play thru once to get silver and then can replay the boards to get gold?

Also thanks for the clue about how to activate the abilities. I was not clicking on the character icon but on the words themselves...and that clearly did not work

I just finished the game as well...playing all boards on the advanced level and the best part...no monkeys I plan to play the bonus boards in the museum archives at some point or replay some of the boards and try and max out the other characters. i used Ali and Tanya for the realms and toward the end finally got Natalie up to level 11 but I could not figure out how to successfully use any of the guys. I am sad now cause there was a year between Jewel Quests so I guess we have to wait until October 2011 for another.

as you gain more experience with each character, the special abilities get a little faster. I have now completed the game completely..all boards in advanced, all characters maxed, all journal entries unlocked...my favorite Jewel Quest so far and if I read the journal entries correctly, there will be another ...just hope it doesn't take a whole year. I played the game using Ali and Tanya and then went back and learned to use the other characters. I started with using them on the lower (earlier ) realms. The hardest thing was getting the award for completing the evasion board berfore the enemy jewel got to the top....before you had to knock it down. the trick is to use an earlier board that has only one enemy.

I am also on the last evasion board in China and I just can't get past it. I've tried everything I can think of. Can this board be skipped as in previous versions? If not, anyone have any ideas I can try?

Thanks so much!

Re: expansion boards. Soloman's ability to reshuffle will knock the bugs, as you call them, back down. Between that and matching the tokens, you will eventually get past the board.

I am having trouble with both Tanya and Ali. I have finished the game on relaxed mode and am working on the advanced mode but both of these characters cause my game to freeze as soon as they are chosen. They are both on the last part of level 24. This means that I can't finish their level ups and can't unlock all the journals. Can anyone help?

Thanks, this was helpful. I don't think the interspersed tutorial was clear at all on this point, and since you don't get the strategy guide until you've finished the air realm, it's very confusing. I was clicking on the portrait and then trying to choose a special ability from the list, and not only did that seem to do nothing, I couldn't ever demonstrate that I had the swap ability - maybe it timed out before I got back to the board? Also, when they said the board would be glowing, I thought they meant the gold tiles would shimmer, and I nearly strained my eyes out of my head to try to distinguish a glowing board from the regular old board. I focus pretty strongly on the jewel board when I'm playing and I probably hit 6 or 7 match-5s before I ever noticed the glowing edges of the screen (nowhere near the board, I might add!)

I think this story is much more disjointed than that of Sleepless Star and so far, even more disjointed than Heritage. My experience at this early stage has been that it's best if I just ignore the special abilities and characters and just go after the board - I expect that will change later on but I went from near total confusion to a string of boards with 5 gold stars once I decided to ignore the story and characters. I also think this version would be very confusing to someone new to JQ. I am still thankful (it's Thanksgiving, after all) that I started with JQ III. I still visit Hawaii all the time!

There are eleven. I've finished them all.

Eleven realms or eleven locations? I see awards for only four realms.

Just for chuckles and grins, when I got to the first Evasion board I used Trevor and tried knocking the Enemy jewel down with a bomb rather than using Hero jewels. It worked as far as knocking the creeper down, but I didn't get the Narrowly Avoided award for it. (I was hoping to find a loophole, you see.) I got the award on my next try, the good old fashioned way: following the rules.

How do you access the scores and awards pages ?
Griddlebone

Use a pathfinder board. (Just kidding; tiny little bit of Jewel Quest humor there.)

1. Click Play from the Main Menu.
2. On a Realm page, click on Menu in the lower right hand corner
3. From that menu, click on Museum Archive.

The scores and awards are to you, the player, not to your helpers (Ali, Tanya, Solomon, Natalie and what's-his-name). Scores are under Player Stats and awards are under Awards.

Question? I'm wondering which Jewel Quest game to purchase next. I don't play the "Hidden Object" ones, however I have completed (or ready to move on) JQ1, JQ2, JQ3, and JQHeritage. It appears the "The sleepless Star", would be next in line, but the reviews are not very good for that game, should I skip it and just bye "The Sapphire Dragon". Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks

Tycoonwiza, my personal opinion is that without the Sleepless Star, you will be frustrated with Sapphire Dragon. There are a number of jewel board obstacles that are introduced in Sleepless Star that reappear in Sapphire Dragon as suddenly "classic" boards. I enjoyed Sleepless Star although I still like the classic play of JQ3 Hawaii and much of JQ Heritage. (The Princess #5 can jump into the Sea of Cortez for all I care, and I say that even though I eventually beat that board.)

However, maybe the new style boards are pretty easy to pick up. I guess I'd say try the 60 minute trials and see how you feel. Both games seem easy compared to parts of JQ Heritage and JQ3 but I find them mildly addictive and quite enjoyable.

SandraAnn, if you're running out of time you can switch to relaxed mode in Options and that will give you unlimited time. After you get done with the board you can move on, then later come back in Advanced mode with a fully-built-up character to re-work the board.

Also, you can try using Trevor - you may have to build him up a bit if you haven't, but he has a bomb that will knock down the Enemy jewel. As mentioned earlier, Solomon's shuffle ability is also useful.

Start making matches at the top, and focus on making matches of Hero jewels to build up a little nest egg of knock-down specials. When the Enemy jewel climbs, use the empty column underneath it to generate some needed matches.

Thanks Griddlebone, I do believe I will go ahead and get the Sleepless Star first, then Sapphire Dragon. and I agree 100% about princess #5. Never been so frustrated before, other than those darn monkeys in JQ3 (so far my favorite JQ game of all time). Thanks for the advise. I've got some catching up to do

Now that I've played through, I think I can recommend the Collector's Edition for anyone who really likes JQ. Playing the bonus boards with different characters promises to be a really good value for the money, IMO.

However, I'm disappointed that there are no Evasion or Unbury boards in the bonus boards. I like those two board types a lot. Of course I can always go find them in the main game play and replay them, as well as fire up Sleepless Star for more, but I still will miss having them easily accessible in the bonus section.

I got thrown off a little by the similarities in names between Pathfinding boards (Sleepless Star) and Pathmaker boards (Sapphire Dragon). I agree that Pathmaker is a good name for that type of board, although it's probably my least favorite Sapphire Dragon board type.

I think iWin should put out a JQ Board-o-Rama with no story, just tons of different types of boards in one place. Even crows and timepieces.

Which board? There are 21 boards in Moonless Harbor, 11 of them required to finish and 10 optional. Tell us the type of board and where on the screen it appears (what part of the background it is on top of), and we'll try to give some hints.

What was your score on that build board? I just completed it twice, with different characters, and kept my score as low as possible in advanced mode, and got 5 gold stars both times. Those scores were in the 14,000s. If you're saying you completed the board, got 5 gold stars, and it still won't advance, that's a tech support issue and you should file a ticket. It might help to include a screen shot showing that you earned 5 gold stars, so there's no question about that.

If you haven't gotten 5 gold stars, try a different character. I like Tanya when points are the issue since she gets extra points.

I feel sort of stupid. On the last location of the last realm of my second time through the game, I noticed that Ali's swap capability does not require the tiles to be adjacent. Being able to swap any two tiles on the board is much more powerful than just being able to swap adjacent tiles as in Heritage.

I just found JQ Sapphire Dragon so short. The previous games seemed to take much longer to finish. So I'm a little dissapointed that I finished it so quickly.
Like the others here also said, I could go to advanced mode, but how do I change this?

To choose advanced mode, select the Options button on the entry splash screen (the title page). You can select the level of difficulty there. If you played through in relaxed mode or normal mode before and found it way too short, I definitely advise replaying in advanced mode.

I agree the game was shorter than JQ3, but I was a lot less experienced with JQ when I played JQ3 - it was the first iWin game I played, about 2 or 3 years ago. Also, in Heritage the length was mainly due to getting hung up on Princess 5 and the expert timepiece boards, at least for me. Maybe I'll change my mind someday but right now I think Princess 5 is just a bad board, too dependent on luck.

As for Sapphire Dragon, you can extend the play by working with different characters. I like Tanya because you can get much higher scores with her abilities. But I'd like to play Ali more to get better at using swaps. I found both the guys irritating - their abilities aren't really useful, it seems to me. Maybe I just need to learn to use them strategically.

@Mookky1995: When I say that, it's always "this game is not JQ3". That's the one I started with, and I still re-play the boards all the time. There are little and big differences between the different JQ games, innovations keep the games fresh.

If you are playing Sapphire Dragon after JQ4 (Heritage), that means you skipped Sleepless Star. The games stand alone, but some new game types were introduced in Star that continue in Sapphire Dragon. In Sapphire Dragon these boards are considered "classic mechanics" but your response may very well be "What is going on here? How do I play this board?"

Here's a list of the boards introduced in Sleepless Star: Secret Entrance, Light Fire, Unbury, Evasion, Dodge (these 5 types carry over into Sapphire Dragon), Pathfinding, Disarm Trap, and Sleepless Star (these did not carry over). New boards in Sapphire Dragon are: Electricity, Snowstorm, Strangle Vine, Flood, Build, Expansion, Cave-In and Pathmaking (which is not the same as Star's Pathfinding). If you didn't play Star, that's 13 new board types!

Tell us what board is giving you trouble and we'll give you tips for that board type. My fingers would fall off if I gave tips for all of them at once.

The other big difference in Sapphire Dragon is the use of characters. Each character has three special abilities. One is granted automatically when you choose to play that character. One is doled out like a hint button: you can use it, then you have to wait for it to recharge to use it again. The third is triggered by a match 5 or better (of one jewel type - it doesn't count if you make two simultaneous match-3s of different jewel types). When I played Star, I got much better at making match-5s and better because that's an important skill for Star. So I liked to chose Tanya, whose second skill is extra time and whose third skill is random gold. That plus the automatic bonus of extra points, and Tanya helped me win boards with high points. The other characters have their charms and some are better than Tanya for certain types of boards. You just have to keep playing to find out what works for you.

Hope this helps! Let us know what specific parts give you trouble!

I didn't like Sleepless. it became impossible to complete the boards. To me that's not fun.
I was thinking this one was going to be the same but I think with the special abilities I can now get finished. I am on level 9 and that's with not usine any abilites except for Tanya's extra time.
I think you might like this new one. the Sapphire Dragon.
